"Mr. Mitchell here" Bicycle Touring the USA was a dream come true! 2006: the plan went on paper. Dreams became lots of research, making lists, reading, checkin' out maps, talking to dogs & cyclists, training, more dreams … and lots of bicycling. OK, and a bicycle crash or two. (Doc crashed ** not me). Doc found a bicycle, pulled me miles & miles in the dog cart, decided less is more when choosing clothes and gear. Ahhooohh, by thinning out the gear we made room for a guitar - so we could howl at the moon off tune. I mean in tune. Once I became the BICYCLIN' AMERICA DOG, I also knew we wanted to meet kids of all ages down the road. It's fun to share our love of nature with you and find out what outdoor places are your favorite (and why!). It's also great to bark about how cool it is to have a dog as a part of your family, and once you have a dog...how to be the best family to your dog! And why not dream! I am proof that dreams can come true! I share my antics with people we meet along the road while Doc is my interpreter. We are Ambassadors for the non-profit organization Leave No Trace, Center for Outdoor Ethics. You should see me try to demonstrate some of the Seven Principles of Leave No Trace. What a laugh. I'm a Pet Therapy Dog through Delta Society - a part of that "plan" I mentioned above. This training allows me to set my paws inside schools, libraries, universities and hospitals for visits. We dipped our bicycle tire in the Pacific Ocean and headed slowly East to Maine & the Atlantic Ocean. Of course I had to chase my tennis ball and swim in each ocean. We saw cherry & apple blossoms in the spring. A little (o.k., a LOT of) snow on the Washington mountain passes. Cicadas. Butterflies. Loons. Dragonflies. Otter. Beaver. Moose. Bear. Mink. Bison. Harbor Seal. A few pesky bugs. A lot of sunshine; a little rain. Wind? Have you heard of headwinds - no matter what direction you are biking? Great local food everywhere. Music jams and festivals. Spring time found us in the San Juan Islands of Washington State! We caught the fall colors in New England - we were leaf peepers! And, oh my, if you haven't seen the majestic mountains and waterfalls of the North Cascades National Park or the splendor of Acadia National Park...put them in your bucket list! We stayed &/or played in National & State Parks, National & State Forests, National Wildlife Refuge areas and Grassland Preserves, National Recreation Areas and Seashores, National Scenic Riverways & Lakeshores. How lucky we are to have these lands set aside so we all can enjoy them. We listened to the sounds of our earth...it's wild lands and wildlife...while camping in our tent almost every night. We found dogs and more dogs to play with. We found some cool hidden special places as well! We also enjoyed many city parks all across the USA. Wonderful new friend invited us to share their homes. |
